Keep Mold from Becoming a Problem in your Office

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

Mold growth is common, especially in the state of Florida. Why? Mold spores can be found everywhere, and they begin to grow when they hit a moist surface with organic material. Do you have an idea of how much organic material is in your office? Sheetrock, fabrics, carpets, wallpaper, cardboard, ceiling tiles, paper, wood, fiberglass insulation, dirt and glue are all examples of organic material. It’s no wonder so many office buildings are plagued with mold. What are some ways you can keep it out of yours?

First, if it’s so common, is mold really a big deal? In a word, yes. Mold can cause health effects and decrease worker productivity. It can also cause damage to your property, if left to grow unchecked. The best way to handle mold is to prevent it from gaining a foothold in your building. There are several measures you can take to lessen the occurrence of mold growth.

The best way to handle mold is to prevent it from gaining a foothold in your building. There are several measures you can take to lessen the occurrence of mold growth.

  • Fix any obvious sources of moisture. Roof and plumbing leaks can encourage mold growth, so repair those promptly and dry the area around them. You may need a specialist to help you get the water damage under control.
  • Eliminate condensation. While air conditioners can be helpful in filtering out mold spores and reducing mold growth, they can also be a source of condensation if you’re not careful. Condensation happens when humid air hits a cool surface, so if you let outdoor air inside, it will condense on air conditioner surfaces. Keep doors closed, and don’t open windows when the air conditioner is running. If the AC ducts run through an attic or basement, try to keep the air moving so that mold isn’t able to grow.
  • Leave the heat on if you’re closing the building for an extended period. People typically remember to drain the pipes to prevent them from freezing while the building is closed. It’s not as common to think about preventing mold growth while your office is not in use.
  • Control the building’s relative humidity. The most direct way to make conditions less favorable for mold propagation in a commercial building is to reduce the room’s humidity. Keep the relative humidity below 50 percent, but avoid reducing it under 20 percent, because that can cause the drying up of respiratory passages, leading to severe discomfort.
  • If you suspect a problem, have the building tested for mold. An air quality company or an Industrial Hygienist can come and do air sampling to determine the presence and species of mold in your building. Our SERVPRO franchises work with these professionals on a weekly basis and can recommend an Industrial Hygienist or Mold Inspector that not only has advanced degrees in Chemistry and Microbiology but is also a Florida State Licensed General Contractor.

If you happen to discover mold in your Putnam County office, make sure to call SERVPRO of Putnam County for help with mold remediation. Our expert restoration technicians have the experience and equipment to restore your Putnam County office back to its original condition. A trusted leader in the mold remediation industry, we have served our community for more than 25 years. Call us at (386) 328-8660.

What to do After a House Fire

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

Aftermath of a house fire Dealing with the aftermath of a fire in your home can be overwhelming. Let the professionals at SERVPRO of Putnam County handle it for you.

Do you know that a fire department in the United States responds to a fire every 24 seconds? Does it surprise you how frequently house fires occur? Hopefully your home will never have to endure a devastating house fire, but if it does end up happening to you, here is what you can do once the smoke has cleared and the fire department has left the scene.

  • Don’t plan to immediately move back into the house. Even the parts of the house that weren’t damaged by the flames can be dangerous for people to inhabit. Smoke damage can cause soot and smoke to stick to the walls, floors, and furniture, which makes it dangerous for you to breathe. Fire can also cause electrical hazards and affect ducts and insulation in your walls, attic, and crawl space.
  • Make sure cleanup is handled properly and promptly. Soot and ash discolor surfaces, and the longer you wait to clean it off of your belongings, the worse that discoloration will be, and the lower the likelihood will be that it can be returned to preloss condition. In fact, after just a few days, discoloration of walls and fabric items can become permanent. Left for weeks, the residue left behind by a house fire can corrode metal, permanently etch glass, and cause wood and vinyl surfaces to deteriorate to an irreparable degree.
  • Call in the professionals. Cleaning up the damage left behind by fire requires meticulous care. If it isn’t handled with extreme caution, soot residue can contaminate the entire building. What’s more, fire restoration experts know what can and cannot be salvaged and have the equipment and products needed to comprehensively clean your home. Professionals also know how to work with insurance adjusters, and can often bill the insurance company directly, making the process much easier for you.
  • Call your insurance company. Your homeowner’s insurance will cover damage to your home from a fire or smoke. This includes damage caused by a fire at a neighboring building, as well as damage caused by wildfires. The house, fences, driveway, sheds, and other structures on your property are also protected. Homeowner’s insurance also covers the cost of most personal items lost in a fire, and typically also covers additional living expenses, even for months at a time if necessary, while you regroup. Other people on your property at the time are also covered. The only time a homeowner’s policy will not cover damages from a fire is if you or someone else named on your policy caused the fire intentionally.

If you have suffered through a home fire and your property sustains fire damage, you don’t have to go it alone. Call SERVPRO of Putnam County for help with fire restoration. Our highly-trained restoration technicians have the experience and equipment to restore your Putnam County home back to normal. A trusted leader in the fire damage restoration service industry, we’ve served our community for more than 25 years. Call (386) 328-8660, to get the restoration care you deserve.

Hurricane Evacuation Plan

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

Do you have a hurricane evacuation plan? Hurricane season begins June 1st and lasts until November, and if you live near a coastal town, hurricane preparedness is vital for keeping your family safe. Even if you do not think you’ll want to evacuate, there may come a time when officials make it mandatory. A Florida hurricane can quickly become dangerous and may not leave you much time. Planning will help make the experience much easier and more comfortable.

  • Keep track of the local weather. Sign up for alerts from the National Weather Service so that you will know if a hurricane watch or warning is in effect for your area.
  • Decide on a destination. Where will you wait out the storm? You can choose to stay with out-of-town friends or family, rent a hotel room, or stay at a local shelter, but it’s important to know where you’re going and map it out in advance. If you have pets, make sure to include them in your plans. If it’s not safe for you to be home it’s not safe for your pets. Choose a place to stay that accepts pets or make other arrangements for your furry family members.
  • Pick your route and plan for detours. Your local government will offer suggested routes to make it easier to get to safety, but it’s smart to know at least three ways to get to your destination. You never know if a road is going to be blocked by flooding, a washed-out bridge, or downed trees. Throughout hurricane season, keep your gas tank full. That way you’ll be sure you have enough gas to get you where you’re going even if you run into trouble. Additionally, it will keep you out of the long lines that inevitably form at gas stations during natural disasters.
  • Be thorough with emergency supplies. Keep an emergency kit in the trunk of your car with fresh water, non-perishable snacks, blankets, a phone charger, road maps, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, a gas can, jumper cables, and a towline. Each family member should have a bag with changes of clothes and a copy of the evacuation plan. Additionally, have a hurricane preparedness kit that’s easy to grab, like a backpack, containing:
  • Copies of important documents
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Medications
  • Cash
  • Extra keys for your house and car
  • Know who to call. Make plans with your family members in case you are separated. Decide upon a meeting spot or two where you will reconnect, and pick an out-of-state friend or family member to call with updates.

Hurricane Preparedness

Preparing Your Home for a Hurricane

Hurricane season begins June 1st and lasts until November, and if you live in a coastal town, hurricane preparedness is vital for keeping your home and family safe. Will you be ready if there is a hurricane? Here are some steps for preparing your home.

  • Make a storm kit. This kit should have supplies to get your family through 48 hours of bad conditions, with no electricity, water, or other basic services. It should have three days’ worth of water and a two day supply of food, as well other important provisions. Ready.gov offers a list of supplies here.
  • Gas up your generator. If you have a 5,500 watt generator, it will require about five gallons of gasoline to run for eight hours. Fill up some gas cans so that you’ll be prepared if emergency conditions last for several days.
  • Bring things inside from outside. Lawn furniture, toys, garden tools, and anything else that could be blown away in the storm should come inside. Anything you can’t bring inside should be anchored.
  • Know the location of your water, gas, and electricity shut offs. After a disaster, it’s recommended that you shut off your water until you know it’s safe to drink. If your home experiences flooding or severe water damage, we recommend shutting off your electricity as well. Don’t turn off your gas until local officials tell you to do so.
  • Get your windows, doors, and garage doors ready for the storm. Ideally, you’ve installed storm shutters on your windows, in which case you’ll just need to brace your doors and secure your garage door. If your windows don’t have storm shutters, plywood or other hard materials can be temporarily affixed to the exterior for protection from wind and flying objects.
  • Turn down your refrigerator and freezer. Lowering your refrigerator and freezer to their lowest setting cools the food so that it will stay cold for a while if the power goes out.
  • If the power goes out, unplug your electrical appliances. This will keep them from being damaged if there’s a power surge when the electricity comes back on.
  • Get your insurance documents together. Your home insurance documents and other important papers should go into a waterproof bag to be kept inside your storm kit. You will need them readily available should your experience damage because they’ll make things easier in the aftermath of the storm.
  • Have a plan for your pets. Your pets should be microchipped, and you should have a picture of each pet handy in case they get lost in the storm. Because emergency shelters do not always accept pets, make a plan for where they will go in an emergency if you are unable to bring them with you.

Sometimes homes sustain damage, even if you’re as prepared as possible for the storm. If your Putnam County area home is damaged in a hurricane or tropical storm, call SERVPRO of Putnam County. Our highly-trained restoration technicians have the experience and equipment to restore your home to like new, "Like it never even happened." Spotting Water Damage

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

Water stains on a ceiling If you spot water stains on your ceiling do not ignore them, they are a sign of a bigger problem.

How to Spot Water Damage

Sometimes, water damage can be easy to notice, while other times it’s more insidious. It’s easy to see standing water from a burst pipe, but water damage that is hidden could be doing some serious damage to your home if it is not detected and repaired in a timely manner. Here, we explain some signs of water damage, along with steps you can take to protect your property.

  • Your floor may tell the story of water intrusion. If there’s dampness in your carpet, or if your tile or wood floors are cracked, buckling, or warped, water damage could be the cause. If you notice water on your floor that returns after you clean it up, you may have seepage or a leak.
  • If you notice a musty smell, check for water. Sometimes, you can just smell the dampness. A damp, musty, or moldy smell means trouble, because it indicates the presence of excessive moisture.
  • If your home has water damage, mold can sometimes be the result. Stay vigilant for signs of mold, which can lead to secondary damage and compromise the structure of your home. Rust, too, can result in a leak if not caught early. By keeping your eyes peeled for signs of mold and rust, you can stop water damage before it becomes a major issue.
  • On the ceiling, water damage leaves telltale marks. These discolorations can also occur around the bathtub, toilet or sink, or on the walls, and they’re some of the most obvious signs of water damage. Ceiling stains should be inspected immediately because they might indicate an undetected leak in the roof or walls. While you’re at it, pay attention to the corners, especially where the walls meet the ceiling or floors. Discoloration in those areas can also indicate a leak.
  • Your walls can manifest water damage in different ways. Maybe the paint is peeling, or the drywall is cracked. If you see these signs or areas that seem swollen or soft, have a leak detection company inspect for leaks as soon as possible. A SERVPRO Technician can also take moisture readings in areas of concern and check for active leaks.
  • Sometimes, water damage may be happening outside of your line of sight. If you hear running water and you don’t have a tap turned on, it may be running somewhere it shouldn’t. If your water bill suddenly and unexpectedly goes through the roof, you probably have a hidden leak that could be causing damage.

If your home has suffered water damage, call the experts at SERVPRO of Putnam County for help. Water Damage Detection Equipment

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Putnam County knows the biggest difference we can make is in our equipment. It is measurable and reduces the loss on a claim report. The right tools do make a big difference, but it also helps when the SERVPRO of Putnam County's trained professionals are on the job fast with the right knowledge to properly dry and save your assets.

It starts with psychrometrics, Which is the study of air and its properties. The properties of air include temperature, humidity, vapor pressure, and dew point.

We can measure these through:

  • Moisture meters are used to determine the actual moisture in the contents of the materials that may be wet.
  • Moisture sensors are able to detect moisture in carpets, walls, and baseboards.
  • Thermohygrometers measure both the temperature and relative humidity.

Once all of this data is collected, the SERVPRO of Putnam County's technician will be able to determine the humidity, dew point, and vapor pressure. That will enhance the direction and equipment used to start the drying process.

Happy Halloween!

Boo on the Avenue is an annual trick or treating event that takes place on St. Johns Avenue in downtown Palatka. Local businesses line the street to hand out candy to trick or treaters.

SERVPRO of Putnam County has participated every year since the event started. Like many things though, last years event was cancelled due to concerns about Covid-19. Understanding Water Damage Lingo

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

Water form sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment is necessary to safely clean this type of contamination. SERVPRO of Putnam County has the proper training and equipment to help with these biohazard situations.

With that being said there are actually three different water types when dealing with water damages.

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water form a clean source, such as a broken, clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 depending on factors such as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources from category 2 water may include washing machine overflow, toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces, or dishwasher overflow.

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include water from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that had begun to support microbial growth.

SERVPRO of Putnam County will inspect the contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response to safely restore your home or business.

Fighting Hunger

4/29/2021 (Permalink)

Food Warehouse SERVPRO of Putnam County owner Ed Killebrew shows off his forklift skills at the Epic-Cure warehouse in Palatka.

Epic-Cure

SERVPRO of Putnam County, in particular owner Ed Killebrew, has had the distinct pleasure to spend time coordinating food giveaways with Epic Cure. What started out as just a once a week giveaway in Palatka, has turned into one large weekly giveaway in Palatka and 2 others spread throughout Putnam County.

What is Epic-Cure?

Epic-Cure was founded in 2018 in response to the massive amount of food waste in our country. With 30-40% of our nation's food supply ending up in the landfill, there is absolutely no reason for so many families to go hungry.

Through volunteers Epic-Cure picks up rescued food from stores and restaurants, that would otherwise be thrown out based on the use by or sell by dates. The food is then brought to a distribution center, where it is given to those that need it.

Started Small

What started here in Palatka as smaller giveaways that occurred in parking lots eventually moved to a large warehouse. This is where the once a week giveaway started. It has since grown to be the one main giveaway at the warehouse to two additional giveaways around the county throughout the week. The main giveaway feed close to 800 families a week, and the 2 smaller one feed close to 300 each, every week.

Plans are for the large warehouse to eventually be set up almost like a grocery store, so families are able to come at any time during the week and pick up what they need!

Home Pool Safety

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

Properly Fenced in Pool This is a pool that has been properly fenced in, and has the proper self closing and self latching gates.

Pool Weather is almost here!

April in Florida means that it is time to start getting ready for the swimming pool! While pools are great family fun, they also pose some dangers; especially for those with younger children. There are steps you can take that can help keep your mind at ease.

Never Leave Children Unattended

Always watch children when they are near a pool! If you have a large group of adults, then take turns being the pool watcher. Even if there is a lifeguard present parents should still watch the pool.

Swimming Lessons

All children should begin swimming lessons as soon as possible. Knowing how to swim is not only fun, but it can also be a lifesaving skill. It is imperative that kids learn to swim.

Keep Away From Drains

Teach children who can swim to stay away from drains. Children's hair, limbs, or bathing suits can get stuck in a drain cover or suction opening. This could lead to an accidental drowning.

Proper Barriers

Make sure that you have proper barriers, fences, and alarms have been installed. The fence or barriers should be at least 4 feet high and completely surround the pool. It should also not be easily climbable by children. The fence should have self closing and self latching gates. Audible alarms should be installed on all home doors leading out to the pool.

Learn CPR

Oftentimes bystanders will be the first to aid with a drowning victim, so it is of utmost importance that if you have a pool that someone be certified in CPR.

Have Fun

One of the most important rules with a pool is to have fun! Pools are a great source of family fun, and can provide memories that will last a lifetime. Just be sure to keep a watchful eye while having fun!

Generator Safety

9/6/2019 (Permalink)

Valuable Tools

After a hurricane, generators are a precious commodity. From running just a few appliances to being able to run your entire home, generators come in all shapes and sizes. With all the benefits of having a generator they also come with some dangers.

Carbon Monoxide

From 2005 to 2017 more than 900 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning from generators. The carbon monoxide produced from a generator can cause death in as little as five minutes! Never run your generator inside your home or garage. Place your generator at least 20 feet from your home.

Refueling

Always shut down and allow your generator to cool down before refueling. Gasoline spilled on hot engine parts can ignite. Allowing the engine to cool also reduces the chances of getting burns when coming in contact with engine parts.

Gasoline Storage

Be sure to store your extra gasoline only in approved containers. Place your gas cans in cool, well ventilated areas.

Back-feeding

Never attempt to back-feed your home with your generator. Not only can this damage your electrical appliances, but it also puts utility workers at risk of being electrocuted. Have a transfer switch installed by an electrician.

Patience

While some generators can supply enough electricity to power your entire home, chances are that you have a much smaller one. That means you are probably having to get by without air conditioning. Just be patient, and the utility crews will have power restored whenever it is safe for them to do so.

Know Your Fire Extinguishers

9/5/2019 (Permalink)

Not All Are Equal

Did you know that not all fire extinguishers are the same? Fire extinguishers are designed for specific types of fires. Using the wrong type of extinguisher on the wrong type of fire can make matters worse instead of helping the situation.

Class A

Class A fire extinguishers are for ordinary combustibles such as wood or paper. This type of fire extinguisher would be good to keep handy in a wood shop.

Class B

Class B fire extinguishers are for flammable liquids like grease, gasoline, and oil. This type of fire extinguisher would be perfect to keep in the garage.

Class C

Class C fire extinguishers are only to be used on an electrical fire.

Class D

Class D fire extinguishers are only to be used on flammable metals. This type of extinguisher would not normally be found around the house, but would be found somewhere like a welding shop.

Class K

Class K fire extinguishers are for cooking oils, animal fats, and vegetable oils. They are perfect to keep in the kitchen.

Multipurpose

Some fire extinguishers are multipurpose, and will be labeled as such. Some examples include A-B, B-C, and A-B-C.

Here to Help

After using you fire extinguisher there will undoubtedly be a mess to clean up. SERVPRO of Putnam County will be there to help you cleanup and deodorize to help make it, "Like it never even happened."

Fireplace Cleaning

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

Fireplace Safety

Even here in sunny, Northeast Florida we sometimes have to light up our fireplaces. Creosote, which is a flammable tar-like substance, builds up in your chimney and flue over time. This should be cleaned up by a professional, but there is some general cleaning that you can do in and around the firebox.

What Type of Wood to Burn

You should only burn seasoned hardwoods in your fireplace. Oak is the most popular to burn in our region. Pine and other softwoods are woods that you should avoid. They produce a lot of smoke which will lead to faster creosote buildup.

How to Clean Your Fireplace

Some places that you the homeowner should clean regularly include the firebox and the hearth. The firebox is where the actual fire is located. Wait at least 12 hours after your last fire before attempting to clean the firebox, just to be sure there are no hot embers while you are cleaning. You may shovel the ashes into a bucket or bag to dispose of them. Then gently scrub the walls of the firebox. Vacuum up all the light dust that remains. To clean your hearth just simply dust or vacuum to prevent any dust or soot buildup.

Enjoy the Warmth

Do these few simple things and you will be able to enjoy the warmth from your fireplace safely, on the few days we have that are cold enough to use it!

Space Heater Safety

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

Cold Weather is Here

Cold weather is finally starting to arrive here in Northeast Florida! With that in mind SERVPRO of Putnam County is here with a few tips to keep you and your family safe if you plan on using a space heater to keep your home warm!

Selecting a Space Heater

When selecting your space heater, look for one that automatically shuts off if it gets too hot or if it tips over. These features are really helpful in households where there are active children or pets.

Placing the Heater

When placing your space heater in your home be sure to place it at least three feet away from anything that may be flammable. If anything flammable falls onto the heating element or a hot surface in the heater it will cause a fire. Also do not place the heater in an area that is wet or damp. doing so will increase the risk of electric shock.

Avoid Extension Cords

The safest way to use your space heater is to plug it directly into an outlet. If you must use and extension cord be sure to use one that is properly rated for the heater. Use of an inappropriate extension cord increases the risk of overheating, fire, and electric shock.

Always Watch

Never leave a running space heater unattended! Always turn off and unplug the heater when leaving the room or leaving your home!

Winter is upon us, so be safe and stay warm!

Christmas Light Safety

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

Christmas time is upon us! This means millions of people will not only be decorating the inside of their homes, but also the outside. Here are a few tips to keep you and your home safe.

  • Check the string of lights for cracked cords, frayed ends, or loose connections before you hang the string up.
  • If you have an older string of lights that does not have a fused plug throw them out, and replace them with a newer set of lights.
  • If you need to replace bulbs make sure the replacement bulbs are the correct wattage.
  • Do not hang light with tacks, nails, or screws. These can pierce the wire and cause a shock hazard. Use insulated hooks or plastic light hangers.
  • Elevate the plugs on extension cords to keep them out of the rain.
  • Only use light that are for outdoor use outside. Lights rated for indoor use only are not made to withstand the outdoor elements.
  • Always plug your lights into a GFCI outlet to avoid electric shocks and short circuits.

The folks here at SERVPRO of Putnam County want you to stay safe, and we look forward to seeing all your beautiful light displays around Putnam County!

Christmas Tree Safety

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

Christmas tree are really a thing of beauty! They are wonderful to look at in your home, and they also add their beautiful pine aroma to the air. Real Christmas trees are also a fire hazard that is not to be taken lightly! From 2012-2016 US fire departments responded to an average of 170 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. These fires caused and average of 4 deaths, 15 injuries, and $12 million in property damage. Follow these safety precautions to make sure your tree is as safe as can be!

  • Always choose the freshest tree you can find. Look for the tree with vibrant, green needles that are hard to pluck. The tree should not be shedding needles readily.
  • Place your tree away from all sources of ignition.
  • Make sure your lights have been tested by UL for safety, and throw any damaged lights away.
  • Keep the tree stand filled with water to help avoid the tree drying out.
  • Always turn the tree lights off when leaving your home and before going to bed.

An artificial tree, while it does not provide that wonderful smell, is a great substitute for a real tree that does not have anywhere near the fire hazard potential. Whichever you choose to place in your home the team at SERVPRO of Putnam County want to wish you a safe and merry Christmas!

Water Heater Maintenance

10/16/2018 (Permalink)

This customer's water heater was way past it's life expectancy when it failed at the cold water inlet. Flooded three rooms before we arrived.

Let's Talk About Water Heaters

You know that one appliance in the home that never crosses your mind until either you don't have hot water, or even worse, you find a puddle of water in the location of your hot water heater. They are out of sight and out of mind; just quietly doing their job while all the other appliances in the house get all the attention and glory.

There really is not much to maintaining your water heater, but there are a couple things you can do to make sure you make it through the lifespan of your water heater trouble free.

Testing the pressure release valve is very important. This valve releases pressure should your water heater become over pressurized. If the valve is faulty this could cause the water heater to explode violently.

Flushing the sediment out of your water heater can help with the efficiency of the water heater and also prevent clogged pipes in your home. If your water heater is electric be sure to wait for the tank to fill back up before turning the power back on. if the tank is not full before power is restored the heating elements will burn out.

These couple tips will help insure that your hot water heater will function properly throughout its lifespan.

Team SERVPRO celebrating with their end of the season bowling party!

Another Great Season

This past spring we once again had the pleasure of sponsoring one of our local t-ball teams. The kids had an excellent season this year! They ended the season in second place with just a couple of losses.

Been a Great Ride

Hurricane Preparedness

8/22/2018 (Permalink)

Here is a small example of some of the damage from the past two hurricane seasons.

Heart of Hurricane Season

We are now headed into what is historically the most active part of the hurricane season. Over the past two years we have been affected by two hurricanes locally during this part of the season. Now is the time to get everything ready at your home.

Hurricane Kit

Get started now preparing a hurricane kit full of supplies.

  • One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days
  • Three day supply of non-perishable food
  • Flashlight
  • Battery operated or hand crank NOAA weather radio
  • First aid kit
  • Extra batteries
  • If you have pets make sure they have a fresh supply of food, and extra water for them also.

These are just the essentials. You can add any other items that you can think of to fit your personal needs.

Evacuation Plan

If you already have an evacuation plan in place things will go much smoother in the event that n evacuation is ordered. You should already have a location in mind that you will head to if there is an evacuation ordered. Make sure that location is not in the same direction that the storm is headed.

If you have pets you need to be prepared to either take them with you of find a shelter that is going to stay open during the storm. If you are taking them be sure to bring their food and any medications they may be taking.

After the Storm

Be sure to use caution after the storm has moved out of the area. Stay away from downed tress and power lines. If you drive your vehicles watch out for debris in the road.

If there was an evacuation ordered, wait for the all clear before you try to get home. It is hard to have to wait and see what the storm has done to your home, but things will move much more smoothly if you wait for the all clear before trying to get home.

If your home sustained any damage you can call us SERVPRO of Putnam County during and after  the storm. We will get to you as soon as it is safe to do so. We will do out best, in your time of need, to make it "Like it never even happened."

Common Causes of Water Damage

8/22/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Putnam County doing our best to get a local elementary school's library back to the kids after a water damage.

Here at SERVPRO of Putnam County we get asked all the time what the most common cause of the water damages we go to. There are actually quite a few answers to this question.

Clogged HVAC Condensate Line

You normally only worry about your HVAC system when it stops heating or cooling. But did you know that your HVAC system can actually flood you entire home? As the unit pulls the moisture out of the home all that moisture has to go somewhere. That somewhere is normally outside the home via the condensate line. If that line is not cleaned out periodically it can and will slowly clog up. Instead of the moisture going out of the house, it will spill out of the drain pan and onto the floor.

Household Appliances

Hot water heaters, ice maker supply lines, toilet supply lines, and dishwashers are just some of the appliances around your home that can fail at some point. The water will keep running to most of these until you shut the water off, so if you are going out of town it is always a good idea to shut the water off to your home.

Plumbing Issues

Toilet flappers failing is another big one. This will cause the toilet to fill with water constantly. Once your septic tank is full from all the water, the water has only one place to go. Into your home!

Sewer backups are also more common that you would think. This type of water damage can pose a serious health risk and require a professional to clean it up properly.

Roof Leaks

Roof leaks can caused by an aging roof, storm damage, or even a roofer who is doing work and failed to dry the roof in properly. However it happens sometimes by the time you discover you have a roof leak it has already been going on for some time. If not dealt with in a timely manner a leaky roof can cause your ceiling to fall and harm the structural integrity of your attic space.

No matter what the cause of your water damage is SERVPRO of Putnam County is here to help you! Call us 24 hours a day at 386-328-8660, and we will be there to help you in your time of need!

Hurricane Irma Cleanup

2/13/2018 (Permalink)

Calls for Help Started Early

When Hurricane Irma came through we started getting calls for cleanup almost as soon as the wind and rain started. Our list grew and it grew quick!

No Electricity

Once Irma moved out and we were finally able to make it out on the roads we found out that our office had no electricity. With no phones, internet, or electricity that slowed our response some, but we moved as quick as we could.

Different from Hurricane Matthew

Irma's damage was completely different from Matthew. Most of the damage from Matthew was from flood waters caused by tidal surge. Irma's damage was mostly from wind driven rains.

Irma Cleanup Continues

We worked on the bulk Hurricane Irma's damage from the time it moved out in September until the beginning of December. We are still getting some call form customers about storm damage, but they are people who didn't realize they had damage and they now have a mold problem.

Here to Help

Here at SERVPRO of Putnam County it is our privilege to help out in our community and surrounding communities whenever storms roll through! We will always be here to make it, "Like it never even happened."

Wintertime Tips

1/2/2018 (Permalink)

This is the kind of winter we like as Floridians, but we do get a few weeks a year where it is too cold to go to the beach!

Winter is Here!

Wintertime is upon us! Even though we only really have a few weeks of winter weather here in North Florida; there are still a few things you should do around your home to make sure you are ready for the cold weather when it comes!

Fireplace Preparation

Even though our winters are not normally harsh, we do have those few weeks that make having a fireplace in your home great! If your home is equipped with one there are a couple things to do to make sure you are ready to fire it up safely.

You should have you fireplace chimney cleaned by a professional chimney sweep. If you're unable to find one they sell chimney sweeping logs at most hardware stores that can get you by in the mean time.

Make sure that your chimney is drawing smoke up and out properly. Do this before you have a large fire going, so if it is not working properly your whole home does not fill up with smoke!

Avoid Burst Pipes

When the temperature dips below freezing burst water pipes become a concern. There are steps you can take that will help alleviate those concerns.

Wrap outside pipes with foam insulation and disconnect garden hoses from outside faucets. If you have a private well on your property be sure to cover it and put a a small heat lamp under the cover.

Indoors you can leave a water faucet trickling to keep water moving through the pipes. If you are going to be out of town it is a good idea to shut off the water supply and drain all the water from the system.

Pets and Plants

You should always bring pets indoors when the temperature dips to freezing! Their bodies do not like the cold weather anymore than we do! Cover or bring in all plants that you want to survive the cold!

These few things should get you ready for the Florida winter! As always should you need us because of a water or fire damage SERVPRO of Putnam County will be there for you!

Fall Home Maintenance

10/18/2017 (Permalink)

It may not get too cold here in Florida, but fall is the perfect time to get out and take care of chores you did not want to do in the summer heat!

Fall has Arrived!

Now that cooler, fall temperatures have started to arrive here in Northeast Florida, it is time to start some of your fall home maintenance! We will list just a few things that you can do around your home to keep it in top shape heading into winter.

Yard Work

Everyone's favorite outside activity gets a little easier when the temperature starts to drop. Now is the perfect time to get things done that you had been putting off during the heat of summer. Trimming the shrubs and tree branches is just a couple things that will be easier in the cooler temperatures.

Gutters and Roof

It is a good idea to clear your gutters of debris with every change of season. Be sure to use good ladder safety while cleaning your gutters.

Inspect your roof and the exterior of your home to make sure there is no damage from summer storms that you may not have noticed yet. Make repairs as necessary.

Clean Exterior

Now is the perfect time to pressure wash your sidewalks and the exterior of your home. After all the summer rain there is sure to be some buildup that needs to be cleaned up. Be sure to do it before it gets too cool! Nobody wants to pressure wash in the freezing cold!

Outdoor Spring Cleaning

3/31/2017 (Permalink)

If only we could have some of these helpers to do our outdoor Spring Cleaning!

Spring is here!

Now that you have most likely finished cleaning the inside of your house, it is time to head outdoors and tidy up the yard and clean the outside of the house! We hope this list helps you get the job done a little quicker and a little easier.

Windows

Start by removing the screen from the outside. Gently scrub the screen with a brush and soapy water, spray off with a water hose after scrubbing. Clean the window the same way.

Gutters

Everybody's favorite job! Use caution while you are up on the ladder cleaning out your gutters. If you are not using some sort of scoop to get leaves and gunk out of the gutters, then please wear gloves so you do not cut your hand on any jagged metal.

Yard Work

Your yard has probably spent all winter with little care from you because, lets face it, who really wants to go do yard work during the gloominess of winter? Now is the time to rake all the leaves out of your yard. Cut the grass if it already needs it. Do a little landscaping to beautify your yard! A few flower pots with brand new foliage can totally transform the appearance of your yard!

Wash the house

Now is the time to break out the pressure washer! Wash off all the dirt and dust from the winter months. If the exterior of your house cannot handle being pressure washed then a long brush and water hose will work too. If you have concrete sidewalks and driveways go ahead and freshen those up too. You'll be amazed at how dirty your concrete gets.

Still more to do

These are just some of the major areas to focus on like painting, making repairs to fences, and cleaning out the garage. As long as you have done the major points your yard and home will be looking beautiful. It will be almost like winter, "Never even happened!"

Spring is Here!

3/20/2017 (Permalink)

Everyone loves a clean house, but not the cleaning of the house!

Time for Spring Cleaning

Spring is here and we all know what that means, Spring cleaning! While everyone enjoys a clean home, not everyone enjoys the process of doing the actual cleaning. The hardest part can be getting organized and getting started. Here's a few tips to help you get started.

Walls and Ceilings

You should dust and wipe all your walls and ceilings. Use a vacuum to remove hard to reach dust and cobwebs. Use a solvent-free degreaser to remove dirt and grime off of walls, but be sure to test an area first to make sure it is safe to use on your wall.

Dust Everything!

Seriously! Dust every nook and cranny in the house. Tops of ceiling fan blades, tops of cabinets, book shelves, books, window casings, blinds, and anything else you can think of! Your home has accumulated a lot of dust and it is time to get rid of it!

Vacuum

Vacuum upholstered furniture cushions and underneath the cushions. Vacuum your entire home thoroughly! After all the vacuuming of you furniture and carpets is done be sure to call SERVPRO of Putnam County to have us come out and professionally clean them for you!

Tile

Your tile and grout is usually one thing that gets overlooked in your home. You could get down on your hands and knees and scrub your grout lines with a toothbrush for hours, or you could call us to come and take care of it for you in a matter of minutes! After it is all cleaned you may want to consider sealing your grout to keep it looking good for a longer period of time.

Still more to do outside

We hope this list helped make tackling you Spring cleaning just a little easier. Stay tuned for some helpful tips for cleaning the outside of your home!

Does Your Putnam County Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/10/2016 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours. This was a home in Putnam County that sustained mold damage when a leak went undetected.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
